Sleep Tech Worth Buying — and What to Skip
Smart masks, sunrise alarms, white noise and trackers. How we judge sleep gadgets, and the features that actually improve a night’s rest.
Sleep Tech Worth Buying — and What to Skip
Sleep is the cheapest performance enhancer there is, and a whole industry now wants to sell you better sleep. Some of it genuinely helps. Some of it is a subscription attached to a torch. Here’s how we separate the two.
Our three tests
- Does it address a real cause? Light, noise, temperature and routine are the big four. Gadgets that tackle one of these directly tend to work.
- Is it comfortable enough to use every night? The best device is useless if you pull it off at 3am.
- Does it work without an app nagging you? Good sleep tech fades into the background.
Sleep masks
A good mask is the single best sleep upgrade for most people, especially travellers and light sleepers.
Look for: contoured eye cups that don’t press on your eyelids, an adjustable strap, and a soft, breathable fabric. Some newer designs build in thin audio speakers for sound — a real bonus if you listen to something to fall asleep, provided they’re flat enough for side sleepers.
Skip: flat, tight masks that press on your eyes and slip off overnight.
Sunrise alarm clocks
Gradually brightening light before your alarm makes waking up gentler, especially in winter.
Look for: a long, smooth brightening period (20–40 minutes), a warm light spectrum and a physical snooze button.
White noise machines
Consistent sound masks the irregular noises that wake you — traffic, neighbours, a partner’s snoring.
Look for: real fan-based or high-quality non-looping sound, adjustable volume and no bright display.
Sleep trackers
Rings, watches and bedside sensors can show you trends, but they estimate rather than measure sleep stages.
Useful for: spotting the effect of caffeine, alcohol or late meals over weeks. Not useful for: obsessing over a single bad night.
Temperature
Your body needs to cool down to sleep. Cooling mattress toppers, breathable bedding and a fan often do more than any gadget.
The verdict
| Gadget | Worth it? |
|---|---|
| Contoured sleep mask | Yes — best value upgrade |
| Sunrise alarm | Yes, especially in winter |
| White noise machine | Yes, for light sleepers |
| Sleep tracker | Maybe — useful for trends |
| Smart pillows & gimmicks | Usually not |
Tech helps, but it doesn’t replace the basics: a consistent bedtime, a dark, cool room and no phone in bed. Start there, then add the gadget that targets whatever is still waking you up.
