The Seven Accessories Every Man Should Own
A belt, a watch, a good bag — the small, hard-working pieces that turn a plain outfit into a considered one, and how to choose each without overspending.
The Seven Accessories Every Man Should Own
Most men underestimate accessories. They think of them as optional extras — the jewellery-counter part of getting dressed. In reality they do the opposite job: they are what makes a simple wardrobe look intentional. A plain navy knit and dark jeans is an outfit. Add a leather watch strap, a good belt and a decent bag and it becomes your outfit.
The trick is not owning more. It is owning a small set of pieces that work with almost everything you wear. Here are the seven we think earn their place.
1. A leather belt that matches your shoes
Start with one dark brown and one black, about 3–3.5cm wide, with a plain, low-profile buckle. That width works with jeans and chinos and still looks tidy with trousers. The rule that belt and shoes should roughly match isn’t fussy — it’s simply what makes an outfit look finished.
2. A watch you actually wear
You don’t need a collection. One versatile watch — a clean dial, 36–40mm case, on a leather strap or steel bracelet — will cover the office, the weekend and a wedding. We’ve written a whole piece on styling a luxury-inspired watch without it looking like a costume.
3. A proper bag
The rucksack from university has done its time. A structured leather or waxed-canvas tote, a slim briefcase or a minimal backpack in a solid colour signals that you’ve thought about how you carry your day. Pick one that fits a laptop and still closes flat.
4. Sunglasses that suit your face
Classic shapes — a wayfarer-style frame, a rounded panto, a thin aviator — are classics because they flatter most faces. Try before you buy, keep the frame roughly as wide as your face, and choose tortoiseshell if black feels too harsh.
5. A wool scarf
In colder months a scarf is the single most useful accessory there is. A mid-weight lambswool or merino in navy, grey, camel or a quiet check adds colour near your face, keeps you warm and makes a basic coat look expensive.
6. A slim wallet or cardholder
A bulging wallet ruins the line of your trousers and your jacket. Edit down to a cardholder and carry only what you use. A good leather one will patina and last a decade.
7. One piece of jewellery, chosen carefully
A simple chain, a signet ring or a thin bracelet can add personality — the key word is one. If you’re new to it, start with something that has meaning to you, which we cover in our guide to choosing a jewellery gift.
How to build the set without overspending
| Piece | Spend | Save |
|---|---|---|
| Watch | Yes — you’ll wear it daily | — |
| Belt | Full-grain leather | Plain buckle, no logo |
| Bag | Yes, if carried daily | Waxed canvas over leather |
| Sunglasses | — | Good lenses matter more than the brand |
| Scarf | Natural fibre | Classic colours never date |
Buy slowly. Replace the worst thing you currently own first, and let the rest of the kit catch up over a year or two. Accessories are where quality shows most — and where cheap shortcuts are most obvious.
